Is the Future of Fitness in Your Living Room?
In the battle between your trainer and AI-powered Tempo Move, there’s a clear winner. Here are our thoughts.
Working out at home can be a great way to boost your fitness without traffic, weather delays, or public gym intimidation.
Without structure or feedback, though, it can be harder to stay motivated. Workouts might start to feel repetitive and you may lose precious momentum.
Enter Tempo home gym. With AI form tracking, instant feedback, and elite instructors, it brings the energy of your favorite boutique studio home. Unlike most home gym equipment, it’s also stylish and compact.
In a world that’s becoming smarter and more high-tech each day, the future of home fitness is clearly digital. Tempo claims to watch your form, count reps, and provide a custom experience similar to private in-person training.
But is the premium cost worth it? And can this innovative platform replace your personal trainer, or is it still rough around the edges?
Let’s find out.

Meet Tempo Move: Adaptable Virtual Workouts for Any Space

In-person training has many perks. Besides correcting your form, they can customize and tailor each session based on your needs and how you feel. Think of it as elevated home cardio performance.
However, you might not always have the time or energy to meet up. Exercising at home offers more flexibility, but lacks the motivation, guidance, and validation that a live coach provides.
Tempo, a virtual AI-driven platform, is a home-based studio alternative that can boost your strength and motivation. It’s thoughtfully designed to meet you where you are and guide you to better fitness. However, it’s pricey, and the AI feedback doesn’t always feel polished.
We explore whether this AI home gym is worth it with our provided Tempo Move, giving you hands-on insight into how it really performs. We’ll also compare it to the Studio model so you can decide which system has the right blend of effectiveness, usability, and value for your home fitness journey.
Packaging & Delivery Experience
Tempo weights ship separately for easier delivery and unpacking. This also makes it easier to set up the unit, weights, and accessories in your preferred location. Everything you need to set up and use your Tempo is included.
What’s in the Box: First Look
Weights

Our Move starter bundle came with 12 premium Olympic-style plates (1.25, 2.5, and 5 lbs.), totaling 35 lbs.
Optional Add-ons: Want more of a challenge? You can purchase 10-lb. plates separately.
Weight Cabinet

Industrial-designed to store up to 16 plates, two 7.5-lb. dumbbells, and the iOS Core device.
Core Dock

Holds and charges your iPhone and facilitates Tempo’s motion-tracking technology. Our unit came with a Lightning Dock.
- Lightning Dock (iPhone XR through iPhone 14): Includes dock, power cable, and HDMI cable.
- USB-C Dock (iPhone 15+): Also includes dock, power cable, and HDMI cable.
Tempo Move Accessories
Some Tempo products include accessories such as a workout mat, barbell, and additional plates.
Assembly Process
Setting up the Tempo Move or Tempo Studio is relatively simple, but it’s best to start right away, as your trial period begins immediately upon delivery of your Tempo.
Here are the simple steps you’ll take to get started.
- Download the Tempo app and create an account.
- For Tempo Move, connect your iPhone to your TV using the dock. The Core plugs into your device’s Lightning or USB-C port and connects via HDMI.
- Position the Core in the center of the cabinet so your phone is properly aligned to track your movements.
- Organize your weights and accessories in the storage cabinet according to size.
Not the handy type? Don’t worry. Assembly is tool-free, and setup should take less than 30 minutes. If you’re using a newer iPhone (15 and up), you’ll want the USB-C dock. Tempo includes the correct dock based on your selection at checkout.
First Impressions: Small-Space Friendly

Short on space? Tempo Move home gym has you covered. Our small workout room can accommodate Tempo Move and our Peloton Cross Training bike plus.
The full Tempo home gym setup requires about a 6′ x 6′ workout area, which is doable for most apartments, bedrooms, or cramped home gyms. You’ll need enough space to assemble your weights and do the workouts within view of the camera.
Measuring 22″H x 13.5″D x 13.5″W, the weight cabinet is about the same size as a mini fridge. It can be easily tucked into a corner, as in our case, without feeling bulky or out of place.
In tight spaces, a good storage system is key. With Tempo Move home gym, each weight and accessory has a slot to keep things tidy and accessible. No more shoving gear under the bed when guests come over. Tempo is designed to be seen.
Tempo home gym’s build quality is also impressive. The textured weights feel secure, the collars stay tight, and the magnetic cabinet door has a powerful snap. It’s a smart, polished solution if you value function and aesthetics in a home gym.
Features & Technology: How Does Tempo Move Work?
Display & Interface
Unless you have the Studio, which has a built-in 42″ touchscreen, you’ll need to connect your home gym to a TV via AirPlay or HDMI to use all the available features.
3D Motion Sensors & AI Integration
The Core connects to your iPhone and TV for personalized training that uses the phone’s camera to track your movements and provide real-time feedback. It’s detachable, so you can place it anywhere your HDMI and USB-C power cables reach or take it on the go.
Hardware Compatibility
If you purchase a Tempo Move, you’ll need additional equipment:
✅iPhone XR or newer
✅TV or display with HDMI port or AirPlay
✅Lightning Core: Designed for iPhone XR through iPhone 14 Plus
✅USB-C Core: Made for iPhone 15 and newer models
Note for Android Users: Core isn’t currently supported for starting workouts on Android phones. However, you can use the cast feature as a workaround (and for a cleaner, wire-free setup).
Workout Experience: Unique AI-powered Virtual Training

Think of Tempo home gym’s AI form tracking as a digital personal trainer that monitors your rep count and movement patterns.
With good lighting, a clear camera angle, and enough space, the feedback can be quick and helpful. It beats guessing in the mirror and adds structure and accountability to home workouts.
It’s not flawless, though. Shadows or dark corners can throw off the tracker. Reps can be miscounted or missed if the angle is off. In our experience, on-screen prompts to step back don’t always resolve this issue, either, due to the narrow camera angle.
This can be especially frustrating during floor-based or lateral movements. Chest presses, lateral lunges, rows, and other exercises can be missed or undercounted, which impacts your personal metrics and leaderboard ranking.
However, it’s limited without clear form feedback. While Tempo Move home gym highlights its virtual training experience, guidance is limited. If you’re new to weight training or learning a new exercise, this can be a deal-breaker.
After hundreds of workouts with our Tempo Move, the most consistent feedback we’ve received is the range of motion indicator. An on-screen bar, with a 0-100% range, helps you understand whether you’re moving efficiently. It’s rare to hear instructors indicate a range percentage, though, leaving you guessing whether you’re on track.
Smart Weights with Real-time Adjustments
Tempo’s weight plates aren’t just color-coded for organization. Your virtual trainer can automatically recognize your weights and make suggestions on the fly. If you start a new exercise or swap plates, the system recognizes your load and adjusts accordingly.
At its core, Tempo home gym follows the progressive overload training model. This means the weights are gradually increased to build strength and support fat loss. It can also help you understand when it’s time to back down to avoid potential injuries or overtraining.
The National Academy of Sports Medicine suggests that increases in time, intensity, or weight should be kept to 10% or less. This lets muscles gradually adapt while minimizing the risk of injury. Your weights will be monitored and adjusted accordingly to help you get stronger in a safe, healthy way.
During live classes, trainers can monitor your form in real time and offer feedback, making the experience feel personalized and safe.
Personalization & Progress Tracking
A major benefit of gym workouts is personalized guidance, which Tempo tries to bring home. Classes are categorized by level (beginner, intermediate, advanced). You can even specify your desired intensity in the app, and the weights will be adjusted to make the exercises easier or more difficult.
If you’re starting fresh or returning from injury, Tempo home gym’s AI steps up. It learns from your workouts and adapts to your fitness level to deliver increasingly personalized feedback as you progress.
Tempo Home Gym Trainers: Experienced & Diverse

Looking for expert guidance? You’ll find it here. Tempo’s trainers are highly qualified, with certifications like NASM CPT, and specialties in strength training, HIIT, mobility, kickboxing, and female-focused programming.
As with platforms like Peloton and popular Peloton alternatives, you’ll find a mix of trainers. Some are chatty or heavily motivational. Others take a quieter, more serious approach. Each Tempo coach brings a different vibe, so you’ll find a good match for your mood and personality.
In our experience, Tempo home gym classes feel like you’re exercising with your favorite trainer. Some fill the void between sets with funny or interesting stories to build a connection. Others discuss form or provide tips to prepare you for the next round. We have yet to find a trainer who didn’t feel relatable, authentic, and approachable.
Tempo Move’s Classes: Quality over Quantity

Tempo home gym emphasizes slow, controlled strength-building over fast-paced movements. Think quality over quantity. Most movements have target rep counts, but many instructors emphasize correct form over exact numbers.
Strength training is Tempo’s bread and butter. You’ll find a wide selection of targeted strength classes, including upper, lower, and full-body, that range from 10 to 40+ minutes.
Trendy workouts like HIIT and EMOM aren’t Tempo’s priority. Instead, you’ll find structured blocks with 1-3 specific movements, repeated a few times. This emphasizes proper technique and intentional pacing as you work on your form and speed.
A sample block might include:
- Deadlift + goblet squat + lateral lunges
- Bent over wide row + push press + pushups
Compared to Peloton Strength and similar platforms, we find this structure more predictable and just as engaging.
Overall, it feels more like training with a knowledgeable coach than a bootcamp, which is a major plus. You’ll work hard and push yourself within your limits. This structure makes it accessible for all fitness levels, even beginners.
Weights
Most exercises use at least the barbell, and often some combination of weights. You don’t have to match your instructor’s weights. The platform may recommend going heavier or lighter for certain movements, but you won’t be penalized if you do your own thing. This is where your personalized training and AI feedback can help you understand how much weight to use and when to back off.
The weights are a bit bulkier than traditional dumbbells, which can make certain movements, such as shoulder presses, squat thrusts, and even bicep curls, more challenging. This is especially true if you have narrower shoulders. However, most movements can be comfortably performed with the provided barbells and weights.
Tempo Move: More than Strength Training
Want to ditch the weights? Tempo home gym also offers bodyweight-only classes, which are great if you’re traveling.
You can also find cardio, core, yoga, Pilates, recovery, and meditation classes. It’s not the most variety we’ve seen in a fitness platform, but it’s a diverse and high-quality selection for active recovery days or lighter workouts. However, we can’t recommend the platform for the non-strength classes alone.
Tempo Community: Motivation & Accountability
Worried you’ll lose momentum when working out at home? Tempo’s inclusive, engaging platform is designed to keep you moving. That includes a leaderboard to help you stay focused and committed.
It’s worth noting the community isn’t as interactive as Peloton’s. This might be less distracting for some, but if you love sending out high-fives or hearing live shout-outs during classes, the Tempo platform can feel stale.
As for accountability, Tempo does much of the heavy lifting. Built-in tools like weight tracking, personalized feedback, and performance-based recommendations keep your progress front and center. When you’re tired or sore, Tempo adjusts your training suggestions so you’re working smarter, not just harder.
Tempo Home Gym App: What Works, What Doesn’t

As with most at-home fitness solutions, the app can make or break the experience.
Fortunately, Tempo’s delivers a mostly smooth experience. It’s well-organized, with easy access to the classes you prefer, along with available programs, progress tracking, and opportunities to get more involved with the Tempo community.
When you log in, you’ll be greeted with Tempo’s readiness analysis (it’s less intimidating than it sounds). The system uses your previous workouts and other relevant information to help you better understand what your daily goals might be.
If you’re well-rested, for example, it might suggest that you’re primed for a challenging workout. Still recovering from a tough session? You may be prompted to take it easier.
Before you dive into a class, you can get a clear idea of what to expect by previewing the exercises and targeted muscle groups. You can even pick your desired intensity (light, moderate, challenging) for a more customized experience.
The biggest issue we’ve had was a noticeable lag when the phone’s storage was nearly full. With enough storage and battery, classes run smoothly without any hesitation via the dock and screen mirroring.
Third-party Integrations
Good news, Apple Watch users. Your smartwatch device should be compatible with Tempo’s ecosystem. Android, FitBit, and Strava users? You’ll need to wait a bit longer while Tempo’s device integration efforts are expanded.
Membership: How Much Does Tempo Home Gym Cost?
Tempo’s fee structure is unique. Rather than buy the equipment and subscription separately, your monthly fee for the first year covers both. Your upfront cost will be higher during this time. But after the equipment is paid off (usually 12 months), you’ll only pay the membership fee. Plus, you’ll own your equipment outright.
Once your Tempo arrives, you have 30 days to fall in love. If it’s not a good fit, you can cancel your membership and return the system.
If you decide to stick with it, Tempo requires a 1-year minimum commitment. You can pay monthly, or opt for a 12- or 24-month payment plan if you prefer.
One nice perk? Up to six household members can have their own user profiles. This makes Tempo Move or Tempo Studio home gym a solid value for families or even roommates who want to share one system but get individualized results.
Here are Tempo’s membership rates as of this writing:
| Core Starter Bundle | 50 lbs. of weight | $44/mo. |
| Core Plus Bundle | 90 lbs. of weight | $54/mo. |
| Core Pro Bundle | 165 lbs. of weight | $69/mo. |
| Move Starter Bundle | 50 lbs. of weight | $59/mo. |
| Move Plus Bundle | 90 lbs. of weight | $69/mo. |
| Move Pro Bundle | 165 lbs. of weight | $84/mo. |
| Studio Starter Bundle | 90 lbs. of weight | $139/mo. |
| Studio Plus Bundle | 165 lbs. of weight | $169/mo. |
| Studio Pro Bundle | 255 lbs. of weight | $199/mo. |
Tempo Move: Built to Last
Tempo feels as premium as its price suggests. The cabinet is sturdy and well-constructed, and the Olympic-style plates are built for heavy use with a durable, textured finish that’s secure during heavy workouts.
The hardware, from the magnetic door latch to the weight collars, also feels solid and hasn’t shown any signs of wear or fatigue despite frequent use. Unlike a Peloton bike or other exercise machines, there aren’t many moving parts that can wear out over time. The simplicity is a big draw.
We’ve completed over 300 classes with zero issues so far.
However, issues may arise at any time. Here’s a look at the warranty coverage:
- Cabinet: 3 years
- Interactive Display: 12 months
- Bench, squat rack, weight plate holder, kettlebell, heart rate monitor: 12 months
- Barbells, collar, and weights: 3 years
- Labor and installation: 12 months

If you want to get stronger and fitter, the Tempo Move and Tempo Studio are both good options. However, there are key differences. Besides budget and available space, consider how immersive you want your home workouts to be.
Is Tempo Move Home Gym Right for Me?
Starting at $59 per month, Tempo Move home gym is the more compact and affordable option. However, its weight selection and strength training accessories aren’t as robust as the Studio.
It also requires at least an iPhone XR and a TV with HDMI or AirPlay for AI-assisted form monitoring and feedback. The minimalist equipment set, including two 7.5-lb. dumbbells and 35 lbs. of weight plates, caters to tight spaces and budget constraints.
The Tempo Move home gym storage cabinet is also thoughtfully designed for small spaces, including apartments and condos. For this reason, the emphasis is on convenience and efficiency.
Is Tempo Studio Home Gym Right for Me?
Priced at $139 per month, Tempo Studio home gym offers a more comprehensive experience. Unlike Move, which requires an iPhone and separate connection, Studio has a 42” touchscreen, built-in form correction, and professional-grade equipment for a complete home gym.
Compared to Tempo Move, it has a larger weight selection (75 lbs.) and more accessories (full barbell included) for a wider range of exercises. It’s great if you want the full home gym experience. However, the extra weight and equipment require more space.
While the Move caters to lighter workouts and smaller spaces, the Studio is optimized for serious athletes and those who prefer a plug-and-play style.
Tempo Core
Not ready for the full package? You’ll find Starter and Core bundles with essential weight sets. No screens or AI required.
Final Verdict: Is Tempo Home Gym Worth It?

Like you, we try to avoid paying for subscriptions that we don’t really need or want. Tempo is far from cheap, with a starting price of $59/mo. for the Move starter bundle.
After lifting over 3,000 pounds (not at once) with Tempo Move home gym, there are some definite highs and lows.
If you crave a fully interactive platform, similar to Peloton, or need frequent form corrections, then Tempo might not be the right platform.
However, it’s a great investment if you want more at-home accountability and motivation. Tempo Move’s personalized weight training program can keep you on track with your goals and customize workouts based on your needs. Plus, the coaches are top-notch and push you hard while making classes fun and engaging.
What We Like
Fresh & Interesting Workouts
Home workouts can get stale, but Tempo home gym keeps things fresh. If you miss the social aspect of the gym, features like leaderboards, structured programs, and classes that focus on mobility, strength, and Pilates-inspired training help fill the gap and keep workouts varied.
First-class Instructors
Trading in-person training for an AI-powered substitute is no small feat. Tempo’s instructors are highly experienced and credentialed, and are qualified to expertly guide you through every workout. They’re also approachable and authentic, so you feel like you’re working out alongside your favorite trainer.
Personalized & Approachable Training
If you’ve ever gone to a group class, you’ve probably experienced the frustration of not always feeling like things were moving at a comfortable pace. Fortunately, that’s not the case with Tempo. Despite the beginner, intermediate, or advanced label, you’ll get tips and suggestions to go harder or easier if needed. This gives you a healthy balance between pushing hard and adequately recovering for the next round.
What We Don’t
Underwhelming Value for the Price
Tempo’s steep fees can be a turn-off. It’s true that you’re paying for real-time form feedback, rep counting, and a progressive plan to help you get fitter and stronger.
However, there’s also pressure to return your equipment and cancel your membership within a short window if you don’t like it. Some competitors have more lenient policies, but with Tempo, it’s good to know the motivation and finances are there before you take the plunge.
Lacks High-level Feedback
Despite the hype, Tempo’s AI-powered feedback falls short. It’s supposed to mimic in-person training, complete with real-time form correction. Features like motion indicators and weight adjustment suggestions aside, detailed form correction is where Tempo misses the mark.
It’s nice to know that you’re squatting deeply enough, but there’s no indication that your form is safe or effective. This lack of meaningful guidance can reinforce bad habits, especially if you’re new to weight training or learning new exercises.
Most of our feedback focused on weight suggestions rather than form quality. Real-life obstacles such as poor lighting, bad camera angles, or shadows can make the AI tracker miscount reps or fail to register entire movements. We’ve especially noticed these issues with floor-based movements, such as chest presses and core exercises.
Time-consuming Weight Changes
Tempo lacks a quick-change system, so you have to manually change the weights. This isn’t a big deal in pre-recorded classes, since you can hit pause and catch up. However, that can prolong the workout. It also eats into your precious recovery time and can be stressful if you’re rushing to stay on pace.
Final Thoughts
If you want detailed form feedback for your home workouts, Tempo’s platform falls short. However, it’s a great choice if you need accountability, structure, and motivation more than actual form feedback. We use our review unit 3-4 days a week and have yet to feel bored or unmotivated. The platform’s highly personalized feedback and suggestions can help you get stronger and push harder than you might otherwise at home.
FAQS
Do I Need an iPhone?
Yes. Tempo Move is designed to work best with an iPhone (XR or later). Android users can consider the Studio Suite or use screen casting after starting a workout.
What Is the Tempo Core?
The Core connects your iPhone and TV to boost your personal training experience by using the iPhone camera to track your movements and provide real-time feedback. It’s also detachable and can go anywhere your HDMI and USB-C power cables reach (and beyond).
Do I Need the Tempo Core?
You don’t need a Core, but we recommend it for maximum stability and the optimal angle for your workouts. You can use a USB-C adapter with an older Lightning dock, but your phone may wobble or sit too high. This can interfere with rep tracking and form correction due to poor camera angles.
Do I Have to Use Tempo Weights?
Although you can use other weights, the Tempo Move and Tempo Studio home gym weights are color-coded so that the sensors can recognize the totals and monitor your form.
Do I Need a Wearable Device to Work out with Tempo Home Gym?
No, you don’t need a wearable device to exercise with Tempo Move or Tempo Studio. However, you can connect a Tempo or Apple Watch heart rate monitor for more detailed insights.
